If you were to ask me what is the most common question I get asked as a Makeup Artist, it would be very easy for me to answer without hesitation.
“How to can I hide my dark eyes?”
Unfortunately with dark eyes it can be hereditary, it can be your ethnicity (darker skin tones can often have patches of discolouration in the skin) and it can also just be lifestyle stressors such as poor diet and tiredness. In the same way this can also induce puffy eyes.
There are products and makeup tricks that can improve the appearance of your skin, brighten up your eyes and neutralise discolouration… and here are my top recommendations.
BeautyBio Science - Bright Eyes Illuminating Colloidal Silver and Collagen Eye Patches (15 pairs)
I love the Bright Eyes eye patches by BeautyBio. They are a calming way to refresh tired eyes and contain a healing complex of aloe, natural collagen, illuminating pearls and colloidal silver which really brightens up the target area. I like to keep mine in the fridge for a nice cooling effect. This will revitalise your eyes and help to reduce the puffiness. These eye patches can also be used in various places around the face to as well as under the eyes to target crows feet and the fine lines between your nose and mouth (as shown in the video).
Emulsion Eye Cream with Revital Eyes
Avoid using heavy face creams underneath your eyes. The skin is very thin underneath your eye and heavy creams can retain under the eye causing puffy eyes. Eye creams/serums are created specifically to target that delicate area and are formulated with ingredients to brighten, hydrate and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Treat this area with care by applying your cream/serum delicately with your ring finger. If you are looking for a new eye cream to add to your routine, try Emulsion Eye Cream. Rich in firming and nourishing ingredients such as pomegranate, green tea and caffeine which tones and rejuvenates the eye area.
Available from emulsion.co.uk, - £22.00
Lets talk foundations and concealers…
My top tip - do not apply foundation underneath your eyes! Again, as the skin is very thin here products should be used sparingly, particularly with maturing skin. Foundations can be heavy in consistency and the aim is brighten underneath the eyes which we can do using specific under eye concealers. So apply your base (whether its a BB cream, foundation, tinted moisturiser etc) and leave a space under your eyes. Then apply under eye concealer under the eyes and blend between the concealer and foundation. Under eye concealer has light reflecting particles to illuminate the skin. I would recommend 1 shade lighter than your foundation to get a natural brightening effect.
Illamasqua Skin Base Concealer Pen
This pen is really easy to apply and the metal tip provides a cooling effect (which helps to minimise puffiness). As well as providing an amazing full coverage finish it also contains Vitamin E and pro-vitamin B5 - which improves the moisture in the target area as well as fighting free radicals (including the ones that come from UV light). This slimline pen is great addition to your makeup bag.

While we are talking about concealers, do not get confused with using a blemish concealer for underneath your eyes…
Blemish concealers are amazing for covering spots and mild discolouration in the skin but blemish concealers tend to be a thicker consistency than a watery under eye concealer. They are thicker as they are buildable (to cover those stubborn spots and breakouts). So using this type of concealer underneath your eyes will be far too thick and disastrous if your skin is maturing. You will age yourself by 20 years just by using the wrong concealer product.
So remember, most under eye concealers will be labelled as such and blemish concealers are likely to be in pots, tubs or palettes.
Too Faced Peach Perfect Instant Coverage Concealer
Finding a good concealer is something I have struggled with as much as finding a mascara I absolutely love however this is a really concealer feels really lightweight on the skin. It is buildable though - perfect for covering those stubborn blemishes. The extra bonus to this product is that it is a long-wearing product making it perfect for special occasions and especially brides. It is crease-proof (up to 12 hours) and waterproof which is fabulous and it has a really pleasant fragrance due to being infused with a peach scent and extract. A great size for your handbag too if needed.
For those of you who have discolouration in your skin (such as people who suffer with rosacea can have redness in the skin, or some darker skin tones or maturing skin can become quite blue/purple underneath the eyes) you would need to colour-correct the skin the skin prior to using an under eye concealer or foundation. If your skin is particularly discoloured and you do not neutralise the skin colour first before applying a base/eye brightener, it can result in grey, sallow looking skin.
Colour correction is a big topic all of its own which I will cover separately very soon but the transformation in brightening up the complexion (just by neutralising the colour) can be a significant game changer. I see this so often with my clients and advising clients via my makeup 1:1 tutorial sessions.
Using an eye brightener pencil in the waterline of your eye can cheat the way to refreshing tired looking eyes. A good quality waterproof pencil is always advisable and there are so many pencils on the market that advertise themselves as waterproof but the application doesn’t last…
Charlotte Tilbury Rock ’n’ Kohl Eye Cheat pencil
My absolute favourite to date is Charlotte Tilbury “Rock n Kohl Eye Cheat”. It’s a flattering nude brightener which dramatically improves the appearance of tired eyes and it really does stay put.

Last top tip and this is ENTIRELY FREE! Thats right, FREE! Drink lots of water. We all have access to water and the benefits on both health and appearance are huge! If someone told you there was a magic elixir that would make your eyes sparkle, reduce puffiness in the eyes, improve the appearance of the cellulite, assist with weight loss and make you feel more mentally alert you would probably buy it, wouldn’t you? Thats what water does for you… as well as many other benefits. If you have been eating poorly, it can cause eye bags (salt, excessive caffeine) and water is really going to help push out the toxins in your skin, clear your complexion and you will see results as early as 24 hours after… so add those 8 glasses to your well-being routine.
To see the visible results of my top tips, check out my video explaining each of these recommendations in detail. As always during lockdown, let’s just skirt past the bad roots and the unique quarantine hairstyling. We are all in this together, hey?
There are not many things that we are able to control during quarantine but keeping our brows looking fabulous is definitely something we can do...
When it comes to creating the perfect brow, Benefit Cosmetics have been leading the way for decades. They offer a huge range of brow products whether you want a defined natural brow, a textured brow or a full on Instagram brow, as well as the tools to tidy them. From gels, pencils and powders there are so many different products to create your wow brow and it can be difficult to know where to start. However, choosing your product can be determined by the brow result you want to achieve.
Previously in British Bride magazine, I shared my love for the Benefit Cosmetics "Precisely, My Brow" eyebrow pencil which is great for creating natural hair strokes. However there is a new brow product on the block and its a goodie!
You can now sculpt and define your own brows like a pro with the Benefit Brow Zings Pro Palette. This slim handbag size palette is perfect for brows-on-the-go and contains 4 long-wearing brow powders to fill in the brows and 3 waxes (2 highly pigmented and 1 clear) to define and sculpt the brow. There is also a dual-ended brush and a blending spoolie to help create the shape and precision of the brow. The palette is available in 2 shades - light to medium and medium to deep. I love this palette because it's really useful having the wax in there too, especially if you have unruly brows and need to give them a quick spruce up on the run. PS - plus if you're really stuck for space in your handbag and need to glam up your look in a hurry, you can use the brow powder to create a super quick smoky eye... win win! You're welcome.

Are you looking to give your smile a little makeover before a special event? White-Glo Bright Nights dissolving whitening strips are a no fuss/no mess way to brighten your smile without a hefty price tag.
White Glo is a market leader in high quality oral care and it exports to over 30 countries, including the UK, EU, Asia, Russia and South Africa.
Due to wearing a fixed brace on my teeth, I was unable to road test the strips myself (sad face) so I enlisted the help of one of our British Bride readers, Donna.
Donna had tried a different brand of strip whitening years ago but was keen to give her teeth a pearly white makeover. After a few days of using one strip per day Donna saw an improvement to the appearance of the colour. She said "It wasn't until I saw the after photo I realised how much difference they made". There was also no pain or sensitivity which can happen with some professional dental teeth whitening systems.
These strips are a great quick fix to a brighter smile (one shade or more) ahead of your special occasion.

Although I have always been familiar with the Burts Bees brand due to always having a lip balm in every handbag, drawer and coat pocket I have to confess until recently I had yet to try the makeup range.
A few weeks ago I received a lovely parcel of Burts Bees makeup products to sample so I was keen to pull together one wearable look, perfect for the natural bride using only these products.
Before creating my look, I had prepped my skin by cleansing, moisturising and priming my eyelids (with non Burts Bees products) but my lips were moisturised with the Burts Bees All Weather lip balm pre makeup application and I used only 6 products to create the full bridal inspired look using only Burts Bees makeup.
Check out this short tutorial showing you how I created this look. My aim is always to show real women, real skin and zero editing.
Personally I love the dewy look. It is super pretty for brides and also very flattering for mature skin. I LOVED the results of my base. Although the foundation was probably heavier coverage than I am used to wearing it did feel really nice on my skin as it hydrates and nourishes but the cheek and lip stick was the winning product for me. Firstly being a multi-purpose product means it takes up less space in the makeup bag and perfect for travelling but also, it made my skin glow without the need for adding a highlighter. I had so many compliments on this look and mostly due to my glowing skin.

Beautiful Anjana has the perfect skin tone for this fresh inspiration. This is the second look in this series inspired by the current cut crease phenomenon which is a fusion of modern glam and Asian bridal makeup.
Anjana's base was prepped using Mac Strobe Cream and Mac Studio Fix foundation to get her golden skin glowing.
This look was created to really make the eyes stand out as a feature. I used the new LA Girl Artistry palette (available from Beauty Bay - £15.00)
I created a dark crease in the socket and layered up on the gold shimmer on her eyelid. A soft brown was smoked underneath the eyes.
The cats eye winged liner really elongated the eye shape. I used Maybelline's "Lasting Drama Gel" in intense black across the lid and in the waterline for added definition.
False lashes finished off this glam eye look - I used one of my kit favourites - Eyelure "Enchanted - The Last Edit".
Lashings of gorgeous nude gloss by Peaches and Cream in "Hunny" was the perfect final touch for the makeup application.
Anjana's hair was prepped with Bumble and Bumble invisible oil taming the flyaways, then waved and set by taking big sections with the cloud nine iron. The whole hair was backcombed using Hair Shark and sprayed with Schwarzkopf Got2Be Styling Spray. A hair doughnut from Primark was cut up and made in to padding to fix to the top of the head to create extra height for the beehive. Each section was teased through and set with Bumble and Bumble Soft Texture Spray to create a glam, yet tousled look with a feather soft feel.
Are you looking to try to new product to give your barnet a boost?
I have just been introduced to Cake Beauty and I am now a fan of this deliciously sweet smelling brand.
Cake Beauty was created by Heather Reier from Ontario and the brand have a full range of seriously gorgeous beauty products.
I have been using the "The Big Big Deal" thickening volume shampoo and "The Big Wig" (fabulous name!) thickening volume condition. As a product junkie, I was a fan of the cute pink bottle but an even bigger fan of the SMELL. Yummy! A little squish of the bottle and a glorious poof of sweet shop explodes from the lid. My hair is pretty fine so these products have really made a difference to my own hair. Jam-packed with natural ingredients the formula nourishes and plumps hair, making it feel thicker. A little bit goes a long way too. It lathers up like a dream!
Cake Beauty is a Vegan and Cruelty Free brand yay! Available at Boots from £2.99 #thisiscakeland
Some of the cut-crease looks you see on social media can very dramatic and bold but might not necessarily feel wearable for "most" people but the beauty of makeup is that it's all about personal preference. If we all looked the same or liked the same things the world would be a very dull place. I prefer to create beautiful looks that "feel" wearable as well as looking beautiful too. So, this is my version of the natural cut-crease look as modelled by stunning Min Cai (represented by TTM Model Management).
Natural, nude tones...
I was super excited to try the new LA Girl Cosmetics nude palette in Mastery to create this eye look on model, Min. A nice nude palette is a staple requirement in my makeup kit (available at Beauty Bay for £15.00) and this is such a great addition with an affordable price tag too!
What other products were used?
As a base, I used Mac Studio Fix foundation for a light base, adding a subtle contour to Min's amazing natural bone structure using Anastasia Beverley Hills "Light to Medium" powder contour palette and added some warmth to the cheeks with a soft pink crème blush from Kryolan "Ambient".
Min's brows were filled out using HD Brow "Foxy" palette and her eye makeup was finished using Benefit Cosmetics "Bad Gal" mascara and Maybelline's "Lasting Drama Gel" in intense black for the dramatic wing.
Her lips were kept soft nude pink by a light application of Mac Cosmetics "Kinda Sexy" matte lipstick to compliment her warm complexion.
The hair was combed out root to tip using the Cloud Nine luxury texture comb and finished off with both hair spray and oil mist to create hold but give it an extra glossy look.
So there we have it... a super glam, yet natural cut-crease look. Even with nude tones, you can still create something a little more dramatic and fun.
